Social Value of Offsets (SVO) Tool

Getting Started
Tool and science background.

About the Tool

This tool calculates the Social Value of an Offset (SVO), the economic damages avoided by your project over time.

Rather than claiming temporary carbon storage cancels out permanent emissions, the SVO lets you compare the welfare benefit of risky or temporary storage against a permanent removal.

The Science Behind the Tool

Based on the work by Ben Groom and Frank Venmans in Nature, the SVO metric provides a robust method to evaluate temporary carbon storage.

How It Works

Step 1The Physical Asset

Define your project's storage timeline and carbon profile: how much CO₂ is stored, and for how long.

Step 2The Evaluation

Choose the climate scenario your project operates in, set economic damage assumptions, and define risks.

The Output

Generate a results summary that calculates your project's social value per tonne and economic equivalence.
